Norfolk, Va. - Demolition crews started tearing down the old Norfolk Circuit Courthouse on Thursday morning.

The demolition of the 50-year-old building will make room for new renovations at the civic plaza, including raising the plaza to prevent flooding, enhancing public open space, adding bio-infiltration plantings, and extending Main Street to create a new public drop-off area.

The project to build a new courthouse and civic plaza complex started in 2004. The new Norfolk Courthouse opened in January 2015 with the new Circuit and General District courts. Construction is underway on the new Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, the law library and the civic plaza renovations.

The project should be totally complete in 2017.
