Sussex County, Va. – A woman has died after crashing into the railing of a bridge, causing her car to become submerged into Stoney Creek, according to Virginia State Police.

Around 5:11 p.m. on Thursday, a citizen told a Virginia State Trooper they saw a car driving off the Nottoway River Bridge at Route 301 near Stoney Creek in Sussex County. The citizen told the trooper the car was fully submerged in the creek.

Police say 28-year-old Chaley Markee Brown was driving a 1999 Lincoln car on Route 301. Brown lost control of her car, ran off of the road and hit a guardrail.

After striking the guardrail, she over corrected and hit the railing of the bridge, causing her car to flip over the bridge into the river.

Brown was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash. Police do not know if alcohol played a factor in the crash.
