Norfolk, Va. – On Wednesday, BAE Systems notified 170 employees that they will have to leave.

The company initially announced in January that they would lay off 530 employees in March. That number was then reduced to 265, before being reduced to 170 Wednesday.

Also on Wednesday, 200 of the 530 employees who were first told they would be laid off in March, were given layoff notices that they could be laid off on or about April 30.

BAE Systems said recent contract awards and additional work on current maintenance contracts have improved the shipyard’s workload and reduced the size of the layoff.

The workforce had already fallen from almost 1,500 to just over 1,000 employees after layoffs in December.
