PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Police are providing more details to NewsChannel 3 after a man was shot last night.

Officers were called to a report of a gunshot victim in the 2500 block of Evergreen Place around 8:45 p.m. Neighbors said the man was actually shot on Jefferson St. after attending a get together at the Dale Homes apartment complex. They said he ran across the street to Evergreen where he collapsed.

Witnesses told NewsChannel 3 he was shot in the back.

While this crime was taking place a candlelight vigil was being held for 21 year old Terrance Johnson, a man shot and killed last Friday. Those attending the vigil saw the man collapse and called 9-1-1.

Just hours before, a few blocks away Portsmouth Police Chief Tonya Chapman was launching the R.E.S.E.T program to help stop crime in these communities.

The victim was taken to the hospital. Police said he is a 19 year old man and friends said he is a senior at Woodrow Wilson High School.

Friends told NewsChannel 3 that he is recovering and hoping to be released from the hospital by the end of the day.
