Virginians are going online like never before to register to vote in the 2016 presidential election.
For the first time, more Virginians are registering to vote online than at local DMV offices.
New data from theState Board of Elections today shows about 40 percent of new voter registrations in the first three months of this year came through Virginia’s online registration system.
Thirty-three percent registered through the DMV.
Overall, voter registration through March is up 35 percent over four years ago.
Governor McAuliffe recently restored the voting rights of more than 200,000 convicted felons. So far, nearly 4,000 have registered to vote, according to the Virginia Election Data Project.
Republican leaders have hired a high-profile lawyer and are considering a legal challenge to McAuliffe’s action.
Virginia is considered a swing state in the presidential election and both the Republican and Democratic tickets are expected to campaign often and spend heavily in the fall.
