NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk Police Department held a service Thursday in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day.
The service is to honor the memory of the 39 Norfolk Police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice while working to keep citizens safe and proudly wearing the badge.
During the service, they also paid tribute to surviving family members of the fallen officers.
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.
