Ben & Jerry’s is producing a new political themed ice cream called Empower Mint, a peppermint ice cream with fudge brownies and fudge swirls.

According to The Huffington Post, the campaign has centered on North Carolina after a federal judge upheld a North Carolina federal law that requires voters to show a form of identification at the polls.

Ben & Jerry’s released the following statement about the ice cream on their website:

We believe Democracy only works when it works for Everyone.

But lately, it seems the challenges facing our democracy have gotten out of hand: Low income and minority voters are having their voting rights infringed upon, and money from wealthy donors is corrupting the system.

There is hope. Because every individual has a hand in creating democracy. Our democracy does not belong to politicians. Or businesses. Or to wealthy donors. It belongs to you.

The photo ID portion ofthe North Carolina law was the center of controversy because some Democrats said that it didn’t include protections for voters who don’t have identification and that it disproportionately would affect minority voters. Some Conservatives have pushed such photo ID requirements in many states, saying they would prevent vote fraud. Studies of recent elections have shown in-person vote fraud to be rare.
