Newport News man caught with cocaine after failing to stop for broken brake light

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A 32-year-old man was arrested on traffic and drug-related charges on May 20 after leading police on a brief chase.

Newport News Police say just before 7:30 p.m. that evening, an officer spotted a Ford Explorer with a broken brake light while at a traffic light at Jefferson Avenue and City Center Boulevard.

When the light changed, the officer attempted to pull the Explorer over, but the driver failed to stop.

The Explorer continued to travel southbound on Jefferson Avenue, turned left onto Forrest Drive, turned left onto J Clyde Morris Boulevard and then entered I-64 eastbound.

The driver continued on I-64 until coming to a stop at the Hampton Roads Center Parkway exit.

During the pursuit, speeds never reached more than 60 MPH.

The driver, 32-year-old Julian Romaine Daniels was arrested. During the arrest, officers recovered suspected crack cocaine and an undisclosed amount of currency.

Daniels was charged with defective equipment, reckless driving, evade and elude, driving while revoked and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.
