NORFOLK, Va. – The City of Norfolk will return to issuing checks for jurors who serve jury duty within the city, according to a release from Norfolk City Treasurer Anthony Burfoot.
Several years ago, the city switched from issuing checks to issuing debit cards after receiving many complaints from citizens who had served as jurors about the length of time it took for the checks to be issued.
The debit card program has been successful thus far and have been a safe and effective way to pay the jurors.
However, statutes of the Commonwealth of Virginia may not authorize the use of the newer technologies. Burfoot has reached out to the Attorney General’s Office to review what the statutes do allow.
A formal opinion has yet to be issued.
“We will be ready to ensure cutting edge technologies if and when the Commonwealth determines alternative methods of payment are appropriate,” the release states.
In the meantime, preliminary feedback suggests that the City of Norfolk return to issuing checks for the time being. The City says they’re working with the Clerk of the Circuit Court to ensure that a process is put in place to expedite the check issuance.
