Hurricane Stats TrackTropical Depression Two is expected to become a tropical storm before it makes landfall in South Carolina.

This is the second tropical system to form this year, developing just days before the official start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season on June 1.

Track the tropics with the News 3 Hurricane Tracker HERE.

At 11 a.m., the center of Tropical Depression Two was located 195 miles south-southeast of Charleston, South Carolina.  The depression is moving toward the northwest around 13 mph. This general motion, with a decrease in forward speed, is expected later today and Sunday as the system nears the coast.

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast as the depression moves over the warmer waters of the Gulf Stream. The depression could become a tropical storm later today.

As this system moves inland, we’ll see scattered showers and thunderstorms across portions of Hampton Roads and Northeastern North Carolina, especially on Sunday and Monday. However, some areas across North Carolina could see a few isolated showers as early as this afternoon and evening.

A tropical storm warning remains in effect for coastal South Carolina.

If Tropical Depression Two strengthens into a tropical storm, its name would be Bonnie.
