Man arrested, charged in Newport News Memorial Day homicide

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A 36-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection to the death of a man found inside his home on Memorial Day.

Andrew Thomas Norton is charged with one count each of first degree murder, robbery, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Newport News Police say they were called to a home in the 600 block of Harpersville Road on Monday, May 30 in reference to an unconscious man.

When officers arrived, they found 62-year-old Bryce Edward Hinkle dead inside of his home. He had suffered at least one gunshot wound, police say.

On June 1, homicide detectives obtained arrest warrants for 36-year-old Andrew Thomas Norton. They say the community helped with the quick resolution of this case.

Neighbors reportedly saw a suspicious car in the area, noted the license number and went to check on Hinkle. When they looked through an open door, they saw him lying on the floor and immediately called 911.

Around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday night, officers made contact with Norton in the 100 block of Robinson Road and took him into custody without incident.

He has been charged with one count each of first degree murder, robbery, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and is in custody of the Newport News City Jail.
