VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A veteran living in housing from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-VA said his home has a bad rat and roach infestation problem.

Richard Simanalla lives with his wife in an apartment set aside for veterans who are homeless and looking for permanent housing. Simanella told News 3 since they moved in December 2014, there has been problem after problem. There were already roaches in the laundry room on day one.

"It was a black blanket just solid underneath there and this was a place that was supposed to be clean," said Simenalla.

Simanalla said the housing failed the city inspection in August 2015. Simanalla said since the Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation took over the property in May, the repairs have started, but problems are still there. He has called the corporation over and over trying to get the nasty problem fixed, but the problem persists. Now, the problem is worse.

"They got into the packaging and into the food. So we ended up throwing out two-thirds of our food. So the following month, we replaced some of it, but we had to get canisters, well that took away money from food," said Simanalla.
