Developer pulls Newport News Wegmans rezoning application

Posted

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A plan to bring a Wegmans grocery store to Hampton Roads is now on hold.

On Wednesday, the City of Newport News said the developer of the property has pulled an application to rezone the land.

The proposed Wegmans was set to go up as part of the Plaza at Jefferson Shopping Center off of Brick Kiln Boulevard.

The community has had mixed reviews about the new grocery store because of traffic concerns.

In May, the City of Newport News received a request from the developers asking that city council push back the vote for rezoning over its new proposed location at the Plaza at Jefferson Shopping Center.  In a letter, Kaufman & Canoles asked that the vote be pushed back so they can respond to the community’s comments and concerns, and they need additional time to prepare.

City council voted to continue the public hearing and associated vote to the June 14 meeting. The vote was 4-2 in favor.
