Virginia Beach, Va. - Each year, police officers run the Flame of Hope across the state of Virginia to kick off the summer Special Olympics.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run is a nationwide fundraiser where police officers and Special Olympics athletes run the Flame of Hope to the opening ceremonies of local competitions.
Police departments will relay the torch over 1,900 miles to the opening ceremonies in Richmond. This year, the opening ceremonies will be held Friday, June 10th.
The torch makes it way through Hampton Roads on Wednesday.
Over 85,000 law enforcement officers in all 50 states participate.
Since the start of the run in 1981, they've raised 560 million dollars for Special Olympic athletes to compete in events.
