NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The brand new ARES Self Defense facility in Newport News is completely changing the way people are learning how to defend themselves.

They have the typical padded room with mats for students to learn how to physically ward off an attacker, but they are pairing it with scenario based rooms in order for students to feel the stress that comes with a real life dangerous situation.

"You can stage it out all day long and say 'Well, in the streets I would do this' when you're really just in a room. So we have to create the street," says Rick McGhee, ARES Self Defense founder. "It just changes the whole dynamics of it."

The facility has a park scene, an elevator, a bar, a bathroom, a staircase as well as a home set up all ready for role playing.

"When you're under stress and that adrenaline kicks in, you really don’t know what to do," says McGhee, "so we teach you how to overcome that adrenaline and use fear as a weapon."

The new facility will have its grand opening Saturday, June 11th and is open for anyone to come and try it out.
