ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Police are looking for a man involved in the shooting death of 25-year-old Maya Alexander.
On June 12 at around 2 a.m., police were called to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center a friend brought Alexander to the hospital with a gunshot wound.
Alexander was shot in the lower back and arrived at the hospital in critical condition. She died from her injuries shortly after police arrived.
According to police, Alexander was sitting in the front seat of a 2013 Chevrolet Sonic driven by 25-year-old Lashonda Carter.
Darren Duane Jernigan, 34, was sitting in the back seat.
The shooting happened while Carter was driving near the intersection of Cardwell Street and Walkers Avenue.
Carter stopped the car to check on Alexander, whom advised she had just been shot.
When the car stopped, Jernigan got out of the car and ran away.
Police are looking for Darren Jernigan, who also goes by “DAP.” He is described as a black male, approximately 6 foot and 310 pounds.
Jernigan has warrants issued for second degree murder and should be considered armed and dangerous.
