Motorcyclist killed in head-on collision in Mathews County

MATHEWS COUNTY,  Va. – A motorcyclist was killed in a head-on collision Saturday afternoon on Route 198 in Mathews County.

According to Virginia State Police, around 12:30 p.m., a 2008 Suzuki GSX-R1000 motorcycle was traveling west on Route 198 when it crossed the center line as it came through a curve.

The motorcycle hit a 2013 Toyota Rav4 head-on, causing the Toyota to run off the road when it swerved left to try and avoid the motocycle.

The motorcyclist, 24-year-old David M. Burress, was thrown from the bike and died at the scene. He was wearing a helmet.

The driver of the Toyota, 54-year-old Randall W. Edwards, was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
