Newport News Police say they were called to reports of a domestic assault in the 500 block of Pagewood Drive around 12:15 a.m. that morning.

The victim, a 40-year-old woman, told officers that 41-year-old Earl Dean McNair, Jr. had come to her house to discuss reconciling their relationship.

At one point, the victim was on the couch when McNair allegedly jumped on top of her, held her down and began to choke her.

When McNair finally got off of the victim, she grabbed her cell phone, but he reportedly took it away from her.

When police finally arrived, McNair was taken into custody at the victim's house and charged with one count each of assault, strangulation, abduction and preventing the victim from using her cell phone.

McNair was placed in the custody of the Newport News City Jail.

He has been placed on administrative leave from the Poquoson Police Department pending the outcome of an internal investigation. He has been with the department since March of 2006. He is assigned to the uniform patrol divison and was just promoted to Sergeant in January of 2016.
