VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – A former Kellam High School teacher was ordered to serve six months of a five year sentence for having an inappropriate relationship with a student.
George Brown was arrested in May of 2015 after an investigation into an inappropriate relationship that had been reported by a female student.
Brown was charged with one count of Custodial Indecent Liberties. He was found guilty in January.
He was sentenced to serve five years with four years and six months suspended, leaving six months to serve. His guidelines recommended he serve no active jail time, but the Commonwealth asked the Court to impose an active (meaning not suspended) sentence of at least one year.
He must register as a sex offender, remain on good behavior for five years, will be on indeterminate supervised probation, and may not have any contact with the victim.
Over the Commonwealth’s objection, the Court allowed Brown to report to jail by 8 a.m. on June 27.
At the time, Brown was listed as a Technology Education Teacher on Kellam High School’s website. He had been a teacher at the school since 2010. He had also taught a class at Ocean Lakes High School during the 2011-2012 school year, according to a spokesperson for Virginia Beach Public Schools.
