Norfolk, Va. - A new college partnership is starting at four Norfolk schools in the fall to help increase student access to higher education.
The partnership with Virginia Tech and the Access College Foundation is focusing on communities that generally graduate a smaller number of college-bound students.
They will be working with Booker T. Washington, Granby, Norview, and Lake Taylor high schools.
“Virginia Tech folks will be coming into the schools to provide enrichment activities,” said Karen Eley Sanders, the Associate Vice Provost for College Access at Tech. “We will be working with teachers to enhance their academic curriculum."
The goal is to better students’ school experience and see that college is realistic, regardless of their socioeconomic status.
“It’s critical. We want to prepare youth for careers, global careers. We want them to be successful,” Eley Sanders said.
But students won`t just sit in the classroom.
Sanders says students will also explore the 2,600 acre campus.
She hopes some of them will become Hokies in the future.
“We have a strong academic support system in place to ensure that they will be academically successful from the time they walk into the door throughout their undergraduate career,” Sanders said.
Students will also be eligible for scholarships, Sanders said.
