DECATUR, Ala. — An Alabama woman has been charged with her husband’s murder after one of her young sons, fearing his father was dead, called 911.
Michelle Lee Owens was arrested and charged with the murder of Lawrence Edward Owens II Sunday afternoon, according to WHNT. Police found his body inside the family home while performing a welfare check. He had at least one gunshot wound, according to officials.
A 911 call from one of Michelle Owens’ children alerted police to the murder:
DISPATCHER: 911. Where is your emergency?
CALLER: Hey, so, um, I spent the night with one of my friends last night. And I came home. I’m — I just got home. And my mom, she’s been acting crazy these past couple of weeks because she’s been diagnosed with, uh — or with, um — what is it called? Some kind of disease that makes you think thoughts that really aren’t real.
DISPATCHER: Okay.
CALLER: And she’s just been acting weird. And I get here, and I try to get inside the house. And she’s not letting me in. And she’s telling me to leave and stuff. And my brother’s in there with her. And I head him saying that he killed — that she killed dad or something like that. And I’m really worried.
When the caller asked his mom if she had shot anyone, Owens replied that she hadn’t, “But I saw the look in her face, and she looked worried.”
The caller added that she had recently purchased a pistol and had been carrying it around with her.
On Friday, Owens posted on her Facebook page, “If anyone knows of Christian based safe places. Please let me know. Thank ya’ll.” She assured concerned friends that she and her family were fine, but didn’t explain the post.
