HAMPTON, Va. – On July 9, The Downtown Hampton Development Partnership will present the “Rolling of the Bulls” at the 2016 Downtown Hampton Block Party.
The Dominion Roller Derby Girls and other local women’s roller derby leagues will be the “bulls”, and will chase the after runners. This event is inspired by the Running of the Bulls in Spain, Portugal, and some parts of Mexico, where villagers are chased by bulls through the streets.
The “rolling” will include roller derby women, dressed in costume, swinging whiffle ball bats and skating after the runners. The event begins at 3 p.m. with a Dominion Derby Girls fundraiser at Marker 20.
A $15 fee will get donors paella, drink specials, and a custom red scarf. $25 fee will get donors VIP status, which includes a swag bag. Online registration is centered here.
On-site registration begins between 5:45 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., and is free, but one must be 18 and older to participate. Registration will be in front of the deck at Marker 20. The rolling starts at 6:40 p.m., and the runners will sprint through the gauntlet of bulls with their whiffle ball weapons!
After the rolling ends, the Balloontina, an event based on La Tomatina, a tomato throwing festival in Bunol, Spain, will begin. The person with the most white clothes on will be declared the winner!
