VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Police have identified the latest person to die on Shore Drive as 25-year-old Antwaun Carter, from Portsmouth.

Detectives say Carter's car veered off the road and hit a tree near Kendall Street.

Police haven't said what caused the car to go off the road.

Neighbors who live in the area aren't surprised to hear about another deadly car crash on Shore Drive.

"Honestly, I don't know how to fix it. They've dropped the speed limit and people still go very fast. I'm not sure if there's any way to fix it short of putting in some round about or very expensive options," resident Chris Wood told News 3.

Neighbors say most people speed along the stretch of road.

"I see a lot of people who are unfamiliar with the area, especially in the summer. Or weekenders come down, and they don't even look at the speed limit signs," Ellen Whitehurst said.

Plus, dips, curves, and poor lighting also pose a danger.

"The road itself has a washboard effect where it goes up and down. If you're at any speed in a vehicle and hit that, you can lose control of your vehicle very fast," another neighbor, David Williams, said.

Virginia Beach police told News 3 since 2013 there have been seven deadly accidents on Shore Drive, stretching from Atlantic Ave. to the Lesner Bridge.

In an effort to make the road safer, the city has added hundreds of feet of guard rail to the road.

Plus, locals have seen an increase of police issuing tickets.

"There are a lot of factors. I'm not sure of a way to fix it, but we are going to keep reporting it to the police. They've done a great job policing, but there's only so much they can do out there every day," Woods said.
