NORFOLK, Va. – The Virginia Zoo’s first bongo of 2016 has arrived!
The baby girl will join the zoo’s five other female bongos.
The little bongo’s mom, Juni, was born at the Virginia Zoo over 10 years ago. The new calf is the mother’s sixth offspring.
“We have a very successful breeding program here at the Virginia Zoo and are very excited to welcome this new baby to our herd,” said Greg Bockheim, Executive Director. “In terms of conservation efforts, this is a very significant birth because Eastern bongos are critically endangered.”
The new bongo weighs 46.9 pounds and is almost three feet tall.
The zoo has not picked a name for the calf yet.
