York River Boating Incident 07-12-2016

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. - Two people have died after a boat overturned at the York River State Park on Tuesday, according to the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

One was a 9-year-old female and the other was a 35-year-old female.

Both had life jackets on and the initial investigation revealed they were trapped under the boat when it flipped over.

The incident happened in the vicinity of the Croaker Boat Landing in the western portion of the park.

A 20-foot pleasure boat overturned and six people were fishing on it at the time. Investigators are still working to find out what caused the boat to overturn, but the windy weather could have been a factor.

"We do know that it`s very windy out here today and there`s a lot of white capping on the river. the tide could have played some into that too," said Lt. Scott Naff, a conservation police officer.

The other individuals have been released or did not accept medical assistance.

Both James City County and Navy helicopters assisted in the rescue.
