NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A man crawled from the window of a burning home in Newport News on Friday morning just as firefighters pulled up.

Crews responded to the home in the 700 block of 21st Street around 8:30 a.m. to find heavy black smoke coming from the second story of the home.

Just as the fire truck was stopping in front of the house, the second floor window was broken out and a man crawled from the window onto the roof of the porch. He suffered minor cuts and bruises but refused medical treatment.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the second floor, but the home was ultimately condemned due to fire and smoke damage.

The damage is estimated to be around $25,000.

The cause of the fire is accidental due to improperly discarding smoking material.

The Red Cross will be assisting four adults that lived in the home.
