NORFOLK, Va. – Citizens will be able to celebrate The Tide’s 5th anniversary by enjoying free rides on August 19 through 21.

The City of Norfolk and Hampton Road Transit are also holding a celebration on August 19 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the MacArthur Square Light Rail Station, located at 301 East City Hall Avenue. There will be food trucks, cupcakes, music, games and raffle prizes.

HRT President and CEO William E. Harrell, Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Layne, Norfolk Mayor Kenny Alexander and Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms will give remarks.

There have been mixed feelings over the expansion of The Tide in the past. In May, a judge approved a petition with more than 32,000 signatures to include a referendum on light rail in Virginia Beach added to the November 8 ballot. The petition was created by a group called “No Light Rail Virginia Beach,” started by Virginia Beach City Treasurer John Atkinson.
