Man shot, killed at Oceanfront was shot by friend during robbery attempt

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – A man who died after being shot over the weekend at the Oceanfront has been identified and the circumstances surrounding the shooting have been revealed.

Virginia Beach Police say 30-year-old Michael Scott of Suffolk was shot by a friend as they attempted to rob a residence in the 300 block of 22nd Street.

During the investigation, detectives learned that Scott and two other men targeted the residence and entered it with the intention to commit a robbery.

During the robbery attempt, one of the two other suspects fired a gun and hit Scott.

A victim of the robbery was also injured, but his injuries were non-life threatening.

The uninjured suspects fled from the residence before officers arrived. Officers located one a short time later and took him into custody.

Garry Ta’Sheen Hamlin of Suffolk, age 26, was charged with two counts of Robbery, two counts of Use of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Armed Burglary.

The case remains under investigation.
