HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel eastbound was closed due to a 20 gallon diesel spill.

On Wednesday at around noon, Virginia State Police responded to a single vehicle crash inside the tunnel. A loaded 1987 GMC dump truck blew a tire, causing the truck to hit the wall of the tunnel. A large amount of hydraulic oil and fuel spilled inside of the tunnel as a result of the crash.

The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries and is expected to be okay.

Virginia State Police said the tunnel could be closed for up to two hours. All eastbound lanes reopened at around 1:40 p.m.

Hampton Police and VDOT rerouted traffic while crews work to clear the tunnel.
