CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Kurt Benkert, a transfer from East Carolina, will open the season as Virginia's starting quarterback. First-year head coach Bronco Mendenhall made the announcement Wednesday.
"I've really been impressed with how he's moved the team," Mendenhall said. "He is a good decision maker, has a very strong arm and natural leadership skills."
Benkert was named the starting QB at ECU prior to the 2015 season, but he suffered a season-ending knee injury during fall camp.
Virginia opens its 2016 season September 3rd, at home, against Richmond.
