NORFOLK, Va. – The commander of Destroyer Squadron 2 was relieved of his duties on Wednesday.

Captain Anthony L. Simmons was relieved of his duties by Commander, Carrier Strike Group 12, Rear Adm. Ray Kelley.

Simmons has been relieved due to loss of confidence in his ability to command as a result to demonstrate the exemplary conduct expected of those in command, according to a Naval official.

Simmons’ personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various campaign and service medals and ribbons.

Captain Erik Eslich, Deputy Commander, Destroyer Squadron 2, has assumed command.
