NORFOLK, Va. – The official school colors of Old Dominion University are blue (PMS 540) and silver. Per the school’s website, “In applications where silver may not be used, grey (PMS 430) should be substituted.”
Nowhere is the color black listed. That’s why head coach Bobby Wilder’s tweet is causing such a stir.
The ODU football team will wear all-black for a game this season. The uniforms, modeled by the Monarchs’ all-time leading tackler Craig Wilkins, were debuted in this video.
While Coach Wilder says the all-black uniforms are “coming to a stadium near you” in 2016 – it’s unclear when his team will wear them at home – if at all. Thursday, ODU athletics released its 2016 football home game style guide and black is not one of the featured colors in which fans are encouraged to dress. However, for the November 5th contest against Marshall, fans will have the opportunity to vote for their choice of what color to wear. The options include black, navy, and grey.
But, it’s worth noting, just because the fans are encouraged to wear a specific color – that does not mean the team will be dressed in the same hue.
ODU’s second game of the season is a road contest at Appalachian State. For that game, the Mountaineers are hosting a “Whiteout” for their home opener. Could the Monarchs wear all-black against Appalachian State – on the day App. State wears all-white? Stay tuned.
