NAS OCEANA, Va. - We are proud to feature Strike Fighter Squadron 211 as our August 'Squadron of the Month'.

The Fighting Checkmates fly the F/A-18F Super Hornet, a two-seater, twin-engine fighter jet that is capable of landing and taking off from an aircraft carrier.

VFA-211 is made up of approximately 254 sailors including 45 officers, 42 of which are aircrew, which consist of pilots who sit in the front seat and Naval Flight Officers who sit behind them.

VFA-211 traces their history back to Massachusetts in 1945 when the squadron was established and originally named VB-74 (a bombing squadron) flying the SBW-4E Helldiver.

The squadrons insignia is a character known as 'Brutus' holding a rocket from their original logo back in 1945.

The squadron recently returned home from a seven and a half month deployment in support of Operation Inherent Resolve in November 2015.

To follow what they're up to, check out their squadron's Facebook page.
