NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A possible shooting was reported near the Christopher Newport University campus early Sunday morning, according to the CNU Alert website.

According to the CNU Alert system website, Newport News Police alerted Christopher Newport University Police of a possible shooting on Nutmeg Quarter Place shortly after 3 a.m. The website says witnesses say they heard several gunshots and believe a person may have been shot.

However, police say there was no possible shooting or victim. Newport News Police spokesperson Randy Rajkumar says there may have been a miscommunication among Newport New and CNU officers on scene that lead to the alert stating that.

During their investigation, Rajkumar said they found no evidence supporting reports of shots fired, however the incident is still under investigation.
