VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – State Senator Frank Wagner has announced he’s running for governor.
Wagner has been a state senator since 2001. Before that, he served as a state delegate. “I think I can do a better job than the candidates who’ve announced,” Wagner said in a phone interview on Tuesday.
Wagner says he doesn’t agree with the direction the state is headed. He says his decision to run was helped by the announcement a primary will choose the republican nominee. Previously, candidates for statewide office were chosen during a party convention.
Three other republican candidates have already announced. Ed Gillespie, who challenged Sen. Mark Warner in 2014, is running, along with Rep. Rob Wittman, and Corey Stewart, who’s Donald Trump’s campaign head in Virginia, according to the Washington Post.
Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam has announced he’s running for governor on the democratic side.
