NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Detectives with the Newport News Police department need the public's help to find a man they say is responsible for stealing a car and robbing two area businesses.
Police describe the man as desperate, dangerous and violent. They say on August 29 he stole a car from a Kohl's parking lot on Bland Blvd.
Police believe he has a knowledge of ignition systems since he was able to unlock a car and start it without a key.
"This guy is actually smashing the windows and within 2 minutes he is moving the vehicle so he knows something about cars," explained Newport News Police Detective LD Legrande.
Police say the man was riding a bicycle and surveyed the parking lot before stealing the car. Once in the car, police say the driver went to a nearby Radio Shack. There, armed with a gun, surveillance cameras capture the man robbing the store before leaving in the stolen car.
Two days later, detectives say the man went to a nearby Miller Mart store in the stolen car. This time they say he assaulted the employees before robbing them at gunpoint.
"A male and female were assaulted by this guy we think he is very violent he needs to be identified and taken off the street," said Det. Legrande.
Police say they have found the stolen car, but they still can't identify the man. They believe the longer is on the streets, the more likely he is to rob again.
