RODANTHE, N.C. – Two men have died Friday after getting caught in a rip current just north of the Rodanthe Pier.

According to the Outer Banks Group, a 70-year-old man was swimming and got caught in a rip current.

Several people swam out to help the drowning man.

Dare County EMS and Chicamacomico Surf Rescue arrived and pulled out two men from the water, the 70-year-old swimmer and a 51-year-old man who tried to rescue him.

Medics performed life saving measures on the men, but the efforts were unsuccessful.

“The National Park Service is very sorry to learn about these fatalities and our hearts go out to the families and friends of the victims,” said Outer Banks Group Superintendent David Hallac.
