Williamsburg, Va. (Tribe Athletics) - The No. 13/14 William & Mary football team opened the newly renovated Zable Stadium with an impressive 35-10 victory against Norfolk State on Saturday evening.
Although NSU (1-2) got on the scoreboard first with a touchdown midway through the first quarter, W&M (2-1) outscored the Spartans, 35-3, during the remainder of the contest. Additionally, the Tribe’s defense held NSU scoreless in the second half and allowed just 52 total yards in the final 30 minutes.
Redshirt freshman running back Albert Funderburke led the Tribe with 137 rushing yards on 13 carries and three touchdowns, while junior Jonathan Dunn piled up 89 yards on 18 carries with a pair of scores. The impressive totals helped W&M amass 277 yards on the ground and outgain NSU, 456-237.
A 26-yard touchdown run by NSU quarterback Greg Hankerson gave the Spartans a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter, but W&M responded with touchdowns on its next three drives to build a 21-7 advantage. Funderburke provided the first score with a 1-yard touchdown later in the first quarter, while Dunn found the end zone twice in the second quarter on runs of 16 yards and 1 yard
Senior quarterback Steve Cluley finished the contest 14-of-24 for 179 yards with a pair of interceptions, while sophomore Jack Armstrong (4-51) and junior Daniel Kuzjak (3-59) led W&M’s receiving corps. Cluley also added 49 rushing yards on six carries, while Kuzjak’s effort was highlighted by a 45-yard catch in the first quarter that set up W&M’s first touchdown.
