Man who escaped from Newport News jail’s booking area now charged in 3 separate incidents

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A man who escaped from custody while in the Newport News City Jail now faces charges from three incidents.

Daniel Panton, 21,  was arrested on charges of grand larceny and possession of burglary tools on Tuesday.  He was brought to the jail booking area around 5:20 p.m. and escaped while handcuffed to a bench waiting to be processed.

Wednesday morning, Panton called police to say he wanted to turn himself in. He was taken back into custody shortly before 8 a.m. in the area of Colony Road and Warwick Boulevard and then taken back to Newport News City Jail where he was charged with felony escaping

On Thursday, while in custody, Panton was charged in a business robbery that happened on September 16.

According to police, Panton robbed a customer and clerk at gunpoint in the 7-Eleven in the 13000 block of Warwick Blvd.

For that incident, Panton was charged with two Robbery charges, two charges of Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, Wearing a Mask in Certain Places and Possession of a Firearm by Felon.
