Mandatory evacuation suspended for Ocracoke Island property owners ahead of Hurricane Matthew

HYDE Co., N.C. – The Hyde County Board of Commissioners has suspended a mandatory evacuation ahead of Hurricane Matthew.

Island visitors were to evacuate beginning Wednesday at 5 a.m.

Resident and non-resident property owners will not have to evacuate on Thursday.

Ferries will run to and from the island as scheduled on Thursday. No ferries will run on Friday.

Residents and non-resident property owners will be allowed to travel to and from the island until ferry services are suspended on Friday.

Be prepared to show documentation to access the island.
