PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Norfolk Naval Shipyard Apprentice Program is hiring for several positions.
The shipyard made the announcement Tuesday on their Facebook page.
The positions include: Boilermaker, Electrician, Electronics Mechanic, Fabric Worker, Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic, High Voltage Electrician, Insulator, Machinist, Marine Machinery Mechanic, Metals Inspector, Painter, Pipefitter, Rigger, Sheet Metal Mechanic, Shipfitter, Welder and Woodcrafter.
The program is partnering with Tidewater Community College and will combine academic classes, Norfolk Naval Shipyard trade theory training and on-the-job learning experience at the shipyard.
Apprentices will receive a salary range of $13.84 to $15.26 per hour. They will receive promotions based on the successful completion of program requirements.
Academic classes will be held during working hours within the first year of the program. Courses will be taught by TCC faculty members, usually at the Portsmouth campus.
After two nine week sessions, a Certificate of Completion will be rewarded. Students will be given the on-the-job learning and trade theory courses in the last three years of the program. Apprentices will be eligible to be converted to the journeyman level of their trade after graduation.
Applications for the 2017 apprentice class will be accepted until November 13.
