JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. – One person was killed in a three vehicle crash on I-64 in James City County early Friday morning.
According to Virginia State Police, around 2:40 a.m., a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro was seen on I-64 going in the wrong direction – traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes.
The driver continued driving in the wrong direction until eventually sideswiping a 2016 Ford Fusion, which caused the Camaro to ricochet across the lane and hit a 2016 Hino truck head-on.
The driver of the Camaro then lost control, ran off the road, and hit several trees, which then caused the vehicle to catch on fire.
The driver was unable to get out of the vehicle and died at the scene.
Drivers of the other two vehicles were not injured in the crash.
It is unknown at this time how the driver of the Camaro entered the interstate in the wrong direction. It is also unknown if alcohol was a contributing factor.
Troopers are now attempting to identify the driver and make notification to their next of kin.
