VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – A 25-year-old man was sentenced Monday for the stabbing death of his mother.
A judge sentenced Blair Joshua Carr to 35 years in prison with 12 years suspended, leaving him 23 years to serve.
Carr was found guilty of first degree murder on April 14, 2016.
Police say the murder happened in the 900 block of Sedley Road, where Carr lived with his mother.
Virginia Beach Police charged Carr with murder after his mother, Rosetta Carr, was found dead inside the home.
Officials say Carr had been thinking about committing suicide for weeks and decided that if he killed his mother, he would go through with killing himself because the alternative would be going to prison.
He planned the murder for weeks and hid a knife under his bed.
On March 22, Carr and his mother got into an argument. He beat her and stabbed her repeatedly. After killing his mom, he wrote a letter to police explaining his choice to kill her. Two days later, he called police and admitted to killing her.
When police responded, they discovered that Carr’s mother had been dead for days.
