NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Newport News Police have taken a 35-year-old man into custody after a shooting and barricade situation.
Newport News Police dispatchers say calls reporting a shooting in the area came in around 7:30 a.m.
Authorities arrived on scene to find a 31-year-old Newport News man shot in the upper groin area. He was transported to a local hospital and is in stable condition
Police say the shooting prompted a tactical situation when the shooter barricaded himself inside of a residence on Hanover Way.
Around 10 a.m., the tactical team deployed gas into the residence and the suspect was taken into custody. He has been identified as 35-year-old Darrell Chaney.
Chaney has prior charges of property damage, assault and failure to appear in court in Newport News as well as a charge of failure to appear in Virginia Beach, according to Newport News Police.
The Newport News Fire Department was also on scene of the barricade situation in order to extinguish a small fire in the bedroom of the apartment where Chaney was barricaded.
