According to CBS Pittsburgh, the officers responded to a domestic dispute around 3:30 a.m.

As they approached the residence, the suspect, Michael Cwiklinski, opened fire.

“Upon their arrival, the two officers were ambushed. They were shot with an unknown type of firearm,” Trooper Melinda Bonderanka said.

Both officers were taken to a nearby hospital before one of them was flown to a different hospital.

One of the officers died at the hospital as a result of his wounds. The other officer was reportedly shot in the stomach and is in intensive care.

Officials later confirmed Cwiklinski had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
