PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Portsmouth Public Schools with a $1.17 million grant for educational support to adults.
The Educational Opportunity Centers Program offers educational support to adults who want to re-enter high school or enroll in equivalency programs.
Over 1,000 adults in Portsmouth and surrounding cities will have the opportunity to ear a high school diploma or GED. They will also be offered guidance about college admissions and careers.
This five-year grant will provide services for adults in Portsmouth, Norfolk, Suffolk and Franklin.
The program will set up participants with tutors, mentors and counselors who will help them apply for colleges and learn about financial aid and offer guidance on course selection.
The program will be run through Portsmouth Public Schools’ Office of Adult and Alternative Education.
