Newport News high school student charged after bringing stolen gun to school

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A 17-year-old student is facing multiple charges after police say he brought a gun to school Tuesday.

Newport News Police were called to Heritage High School just after 12 p.m. by a school security guard.

Upon arrival to the school office, officers made contact with the school security and the student.

Officers also observed a black handgun and a magazine containing 14 rounds on a desk.

School officials told police that they overheard rumors about a gun on school property. The student with the gun was involved in the search and agreed to talk to officials and lifted up his shirt, handing over a loaded firearm.

Police discovered that the firearm had been reported stolen in Hampton.

The teenager was charged with Possession of Firearm on School Property, Possession of Firearm Underage and Possession of a Stolen Firearm. He was taken to Juvenile Detention.
