First Warning Traffic – Weekend Road Closures

This weekend we have road work that will close down several brides and tunnels. If you use the HRBT, Midtown Tunnel or travel near or around Lee Hall you can find the details you need to save you some time and frustration this weekend on the roads!

NEWPORT NEWS LANE CLOSURES SCHEDULED FOR I-64 WIDENING PROJECT: Saturday, December 3

 There will be traffic stoppages on I-64 at the Lee Hall Reservoir Bridge for bridge jacking operations as follows:

  • Saturday, Dec. 3:  A single 20-minute traffic stoppage on I-64 east, starting at 3 a.m.

Segment II: There will be a westbound right-lane closure on Jefferson Avenue (Route 143) between the I-64 on- and off-ramps, starting at 11 p.m. on Monday, November 28, through 6 a.m. on Tuesday, November 29.

There will also be a westbound right-lane closure on Yorktown Road (Route 238) between the I-64 on- and off-ramps, on Tuesday, November 29 and Wednesday, November 30, starting at 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

VDOT TO TEST TIDE GATES AT HRBT: Sunday morning, December 4

Motorists traveling to the HRBT during testing can expect to be stopped for up to one hour in each direction. Crews will first test the gates eastbound and then test the gates westbound. Full directional closures are as follows:

Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel

  • 2 a.m. until 3 a.m. – All eastbound traffic will be stopped.
  • 3 a.m. until 4 a.m. – All westbound traffic will be stopped.

To avoid delays, motorists are encouraged to use the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel as an alternate route. VDOT attempts to schedule work during travel periods when traffic volumes are lower, to reduce impacts to motorists.

I-264 West: Downtown Tunnel open with a single lane closure Monday through Thursday, Dec. 5-8 from 8 p.m. each night until 5 a.m. the following morning.

U.S. 58 East: Midtown Tunnel eastbound closed from Friday, Dec. 2 at 8 p.m. through Monday, Dec. 5 at 5 a.m.

U.S. 58 East: Midtown Tunnel open with a single lane closure Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 7 and 8 from 8 p.m. each night until 5 a.m. the following morning.

U.S. 58 East: Midtown Tunnel eastbound closed from Friday, Dec. 9 at 8 p.m. through Monday, Dec.12 at 5 a.m.

I-264 West: Single lane closure between Effingham Street and Victory Boulevard Sunday through Thursday, Dec. 4-8 from 8 p.m. each night until 5 a.m. the following morning.

I-264 East: Lane closures between Victory Boulevard and Des Moines Avenue Sunday through Thursday, Dec. 4-8 from 8 p.m. each night until 5 a.m. the following morning. Victory Boulevard and Frederick Boulevard on-ramps to I-264 eastbound may also be closed during this time period.

Bart Street/I-264 West: Full on-ramp closure Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 7 and 8 from 8 p.m. each night until 5 a.m. the following morning.

Avoid Battlefield Blvd between the Great Bridge Bridge and Mt Pleasant, Road closures will also take place on Mt Pleasant and Cedar Rd.

HAMPTON ROADS WEEKLY LANE CLOSURES REPORT December 2, 2016 through December 9, 2016

  • I-64 Widening Project, Newport News/York County/James City County:
    • Segment I: There will be a single right-lane closure on I-64 between the Industrial Park Drive overpass and Fort Eustis Boulevard (exit 250) eastbound on Monday, December 5, and westbound on Tuesday, December 6, starting at 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning.
    • There will be alternating single-lane closures eastbound and westbound on Fort Eustis Boulevard between the I-64 on- and off-ramps on Tuesday, December 6 through Thursday, December 8, starting at 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning.
    • There will be intermittent traffic stoppages lasting up to 20 minutes on I-64 east as follows:
      • At the Lee Hall Reservoir bridge on Saturday, December 3 and Sunday, December 4, starting at 11 p.m. until 4 a.m. the following morning.
      • At the Fort Eustis Boulevard bridge on Monday, December 5 through Saturday, December 10, starting at 11 p.m. until 4 a.m. the following morning.
    • Segment II: There will be alternating single-lane closures on I-64 east and west between Camp Peary (exit 238) and Lee Hall (exit 247) , on Sunday, December 4, through Wednesday, December 7, starting as early as 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning.
    • There will also be full ramp closures with a signed detour in place on the I-64 ramps to Route 199 east and from Route 199 west on Sunday, December 4, starting at 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning.

  • I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel: Full stoppages in both east- and westbound directions for Tide Gate Testing and single-lane closures westbound as follows:
  • Eastbound Full Stoppage: December 4 from 2 a.m. until 3 a.m.
  • Westbound Full Stoppage: December 4 from 3 a.m. until 4 a.m.
  • Westbound single-lane closures December 5-8 from 9 p.m. until as late as 5 a.m. the following morning.
  • I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel: Single-lane closures northbound and southbound as follows. One lane will remain open at all times:
  • Southbound December 5-8 from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning.
  • US-17 James River Bridge: Single-lane closures southbound and northbound. One lane will remain open at all times:
    • Southbound December 5-9 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
    • Northbound December 5-8 from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning.
  • US-17 George P. Coleman Bridge: There will be a bridge opening to last up to 30 minutes on December 1 beginning at 8 p.m. and December 8 beginning at 8 p.m.
  • I-64 High Rise Bridge: Alternating lane closures as follows eastbound and westbound. One lane will remain open at all times:
  • Eastbound/Westbound December 4 from 5 a.m. until 10 a.m.
  • Eastbound/Westbound December 4-8 from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning.
  • I-564 Westbound Tunnel, Norfolk: Single-lane closures as follows. One lane will remain open at all times:
    • Westbound Tunnel December 8 from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m.
  • I-64 Peninsula, Hampton/York County/James City County: Lane closures as follows. One lane will remain open at all times:
  • Westbound: Single-lane closures December 4-5 from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning between VA-143 (Camp Peary) and VA-199 (Williamsburg/Jamestown) in York County.
  • Westbound: Dual-lane closures December 5-6 from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning between LaSalle Avenue and Woodland Road in Hampton.

  • December 4-10: Alternating single-lane closures eastbound and westbound from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning on Princess Anne Road, between Sigmon Street and the intersection of Military Highway.

  • U.S. 301 (Sussex Drive), Greensville County: Single-lane closure northbound on U.S. 301 at Three Creeks Bridge between I-95 on-ramp and Route 614 (Otterdam Road). One lane will remain open at all times:
    • December 5-9 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
  • U.S. 58 Eastbound, Southampton County: Consecutive right-lane closure eastbound on U.S. 58 between the Pretlow Street Bridge and the Suffolk city line at the Blackwater Bridge. One lane will remain open at all times.
  • US-17 Southbound, Isle of Wight County: Single-lane closures southbound at Smith’s Neck Road (Route 669) in Carrollton. One lane will remain open at all times:
    • December 5-9 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
  • Smith Neck Road (Route 669) Northbound, Isle of Wight County: Single-lane closures northbound at Carrollton Boulevard. One lane will remain open at all times:
    • December 5-9 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
  • US-13 (Lankford Highway), Accomack County: Single-lane closures southbound at Coastal Boulevard (Route 609). One lane will remain open at all times:
    • December 5-9 from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.
  • US-13 (Lankford Highway), Accomack County: Consecutive single-lane closures northbound between Route 179 and Taylor Road. One lane will remain open at all times:
    • September 6-December 5 from 12 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning.
  • Elizabeth River Tunnels/Martin Luther King, Jr. Freeway:  Please check Elizabeth River Tunnels website for the latest closure and detour information regarding the Downtown Tunnel, Midtown Tunnel and the MLK Freeway.
  • George Washington Memorial Highway (Route 17), York County: Crews are widening the road between Route 630 (Wolf Trap Road) and Route 706 (Hampton Highway). Daytime single-lane closures, from 9 a.m.to 3 p.m. and weeknight single-lane closures, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Expect traffic shifts and delays.
