Police ID woman killed in officer-involved shooting outside Naval Station Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. - Virginia State Police have identified the woman shot and killed outside Naval Station Norfolk on Monday evening.

Norfolk Police officers responded to Hammond Avenue and Admiral Taussig Boulevard around 7:10 p.m. for a car accident involving two vehicles.

When officers were on the scene of the accident, the driver of one of the vehicles, 25-year-old India N. Nelson, pulled out a gun and shot the driver of the other vehicle.

One of the officers approached India Nelson and returned fire. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the other vehicle was later identified as her husband. Police say the two had been involved in a domestic dispute at the time of the crash and shooting.

Virginia State Police are investigating the incident.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
