JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. – A 47-year-old woman was killed Tuesday in a crash on I-64 in James City County.

The fatal crash shut down all lanes of I-64 westbound near the Toano exit. Virginia State Police say the accident occurred at 12:34 p.m.

Preliminary investigation revealed a 2004 Honda Odyssey van was traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on I-64 when traffic slowed due to another accident.

The driver of the Honda, 47-year-old Darlene Therese Harris of Richmond, hit the rear of a 2010 Toyota 4Runner, then ran off the roadway and hit a concrete abutment, which caused the van to flip several times into the treeline.

Harris was ejected from the vehicle. She was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash and died at the scene as a result of her injuries.

The driver of the 4Runner and the two passengers inside were not injured. The vehicle sustained minor damage.

The crash remains under investigation.
